Water Permeability Test Does Not Work On Paper Napkin Or Coffee Filter

The use of these surfaces for the Water Permeability Test may result in false positives due to the nature of the material.
Various paper based surfaces can be coated with water repellent chemicals such as starch.
This is done in order to increase the shelf life of the product and to increase the tensile strength.
For this reason, for the purposes of performing the Water Permeability Test it is advised to use untreated paper towel.
When it comes to halal nail polish, theres always going to be various arguments as to what is and what isnt permissible.

So when in doubt about breathable nail polish ALWAYS ASK.
Whether it be your local Imam, your high school science teacher, or even the companies themselves that make these products, you should always be fully satisfied with the answers to your questions and concerns.
Does Orly Breathable Nail Polish Prevent The Validity Of Wudu
Answered by Ustadh Salman Younas
Question: Assalam alaykum
A new line of nail polishes made by Orly are halal certified. It is using the same technology as is used in contact lenses which allows air and water to penetrate through and thus keep the nails healthy, breathable and hydrated . Would it be permissible to use this product while praying?
Answer: assalamu alaykum
I have not tested the Orly breathable nail polish and so cannot make any conclusive statement regarding the validity of ablution while it is worn. However, it would only be permissible if one is certain that these nail polishes allow water to consistently reach the entire area of the nail underneath.
As you know, it is obligatory to wash the entire area of the nails for ones ablution to be valid. Therefore, as a general rule any barrier preventing water from reaching the nails must be removed prior to ablution.
Answering these questions would require more than one-off testing at home. In the case of Iglot O2M, lab testing showed that water does permeate a generous coating of nail polish when rubbed gently for fifteen seconds. However, this was a single experiment and more would be required to allow us to attain the type of certainty needed to state it is clearly permissible to perform ablution with such nail polish on.
In the absence of experimentation that provides certainty, one should exercise precaution and remove such nail polish when performing ablution.

Right now you're thinking that nails don't breathe. And you're absolutely right. They ain't got lungs, so they don't breathe.
But this isn't about that, this is about a nail polish that apparently allows air and hydration to get through the polish and to your natural nail plate. It's supposed to help heal damaged nails.

This is billed as a treatment + color nail polish. Yes, treatment nail polish is now a big thing.
The idea behind it is that companies jam oils or H2O or vitamins into their polish formulas and then market them as a way to healthify your nails while you wear your chosen colour.
Its kind of a great idea, right? Know how you choose a shampoo that has keratin and argan oil and feel like youve been good to your hair when you use it? Same thing with these types of treatment polishes.

The Nails by the Numbers* part is interesting 500 women is actually a decent sample size but I have to read between the lines.
When I see things like 50% of the testers reported that the Breathable formula lasted longer on their nails when tested against traditional nail polish, I kinda want to know what brand of traditional nail polish they used. And if they used a light shade or a dark shade, that matters too. And how long was that wear test?

Muslim Girl X Orly Launch Halal
There should be no need to choose between your personal beliefs and a great manicure, so ORLY has partnered with MuslimGirl.com to create a line of nail polishes, named #HalalPaint.
The first collaboration of its kind with an American beauty brand that caters to Muslim women, the #HalalPaint collection features six Breathable nail polishes made out of 100% halal ingredients and is uniquely permeable to water.
Some Muslim women avoid wearing traditional nail polish because it creates a barrier on their nails against ablution water for prayer. ORLYs Breathable formula, both oxygen and moisture are able to pass through the layer of polish. The collaboration with MuslimGirl.com aims to present a viable beauty solution for Muslim women, as well as introduce a new way to promote nail health.
This line is important because there are so many girls and young women who arent represented in mainstream beauty. They either dont fit that definition or see things about them that are designed without them, instead of for them and by them, explains MuslimGirl.com chief of staff Azmia Magane. This is our way of bridging that gap.
The nail polishes also feature tailored names created by Muslim Girl like Haram-Bae and Wallah Bro Wipe Out, as well as common Muslim girl names like What the Fatima?, Ig-Noor the Haters, and The Perfect Amani-cure, named after the MuslimGirl.com founder Amani Al-Khatahtbeh.
What Can I Soak My Nails In To Make Them Grow Faster
Soak your nails in a mixture of three tablespoons of olive oil and one tablespoon of lemon juice for 10 minutes. Follow this home treatment for about 10 minutes every day to strengthen your nails. Simply applying warm olive oil to the ends of your nails also serves as an effective treatment to grow your nails.

Orly Creates Halal Nail Polish Line With Muslim Girl
Orly Breathable "Love at Frost Sight" Nail Polish Review|| KELLI MARISSA
Everyone deserves to be able to paint their nails fun colours. And now, maybe everyone can.
Orly is collaborating with the lifestyle website MuslimGirl to release a line of Muslim-themed nail polish for the month of Ramadan.
The #HalalPaint collection is part of Orlys Breathable line of polish, which claims to be better for nails than regular polish because it allows air and water to penetrate the polish to the nail itself.
The polish also advertises itself as 13-free, which means its vegan and lacks 13 ingredients many consider harmful that are common in other polishes, like formaldehyde and xylene. Orlys website also states the polishes are halal-certified and do not require a base or top coat.
The halal-certification and breathable qualities in the polish are of course whats notable about this particular line. Muslims are usually unable to wear regular nail polish because it creates a barrier between the nails/skin and water, which prevents Muslims from washing their entire bodies, as is required for prayer ablutions, according to PopSugar.
The fun polish line is filled with playful names for its target audience like Haram-Bae, What the Fatima? and Ig-Noor the Haters, and is designed for a demographic that often gets overlooked when it comes to beauty products.
Orlys own line of breathable polish has been available since 2016, and has been certified by the Islamic Society of the Washington Area, according to Glamour.

Did They Have Nail Polish In The 1800s
In the 1800s and early 1900s, people pursued a polished rather than painted look by massaging tinted powders and creams into their nails, then buffing them shiny. One such polishing product sold around this time was Grafs Hyglo nail polish paste. Some people during this period painted their nails with an air brush.

Whats The Science Behind It All
ORLYs nail polish has similar technology to contact lenses, which allows oxygen and hydration to pass through. Since water is able to penetrate the polish and reach the nail bed, Muslim beauties can wear it and still perform their cleansing ritual. Their collection includes Treatment+Colour and Treatment+Shine options that allow you to apply colour and treat your nails at the same time!
We simply love the names of the international #Halaal Orly collection ranging from What the Fatima and Haram-Bae, to Ig-Noor the Haters, and The Perfect Amani-cure. Granted we dont have it in South Africa just yet, but we love the direction the beauty industry is heading.

Does Breathable Nail Polish Make It Halal
The first time breathable nail polish hit the mainstream was in 2009 after a brand claimed to add silicone hydrogel to their nail polish product suite. This brand pointed to the fact that silicone hydrogel is used in things like contact lenses to give it an element of breathability and prevent dryness as water vapor permeates through the outer coating.
We put this claim to the test. After all, claiming something to be Halal or Halal-certified isnt to be taken lightly as it can impact our religious obligations as Muslims.
What we discovered was that water vapor does penetrate through breathable nail polish but only if one coat of polish is applied per nail . If at any point you apply more than one coat, it becomes impossible for the water vapor to effectively permeate. Another problem with this claim is that water vapour is the gaseous state of water, and in order for water to become vapour, it must be heated to 100 degrees Celsius or higher. Therefore, the act of wudhu can not be performed by vapour, only water in its liquid form.
This brand has released some material showing how its polish performs on absorbent surfaces such as paper towels and coffee filters. In other instances, it claims that water vapor penetrates through the nails after vigorous rubbing of over 30 seconds.

How Is It Different From Regular Nail Polish
From a technical standpoint, Pink explains that, "creating a one-step, permeable nail color required the use of more porous film formers compared to traditional nail lacquers."
Orly's line is created as a one-step product, as it has "added special agents to give it a high-shine finish without a topcoat," while other lines, like Inglot's 02M Breathable Nail Enamel offers polishes as well as a Breathable Base and Breathable Top Coat, for a more "traditional" 3-step manicure.
Water Permeability Test Does Not Work On Hard Surfaces
When performing the Water Permeability Test, an absorbent surface is necessary in order to demonstrate the flow of water in one direction.
On a hard or non-absorbent surface, the water may pass through water permeable nail polish, however, the water flows in both directions, hence giving the impression that the water is simply sitting on the surface of the nail polish.

Are Halal And Vegan The Same
Many people are curious to know the difference between Halal and Vegan cosmetic products. Its interesting to know that yes, there is a difference. If a product is halal, although it is rare, its not always considered to be vegan, as muslims are allowed to use ingredients such as beeswax, honey and animal fats that have been halal sourced from halal animals. Vegans are not allowed to use such ingredients and if a beauty product is vegan, that does not necessarily mean that it is halal. Vegan cosmetics can sometimes contain alcohol and some alcohols can make the cosmetic product impure for Muslims. Make sure to read a products ingredients and/or look for the halal logo on the packaging to ensure it is certified halal.

How Is Nail Polish Toxic
Truth be told, the contact that nail polish makes with your skin is relatively minor when compared to other skincare and beauty products. If you're at the beginning stages of switching-to-safer and feeling overwhelmed by all of the swaps you could make, I recommend prioritizing products that make the most regular contact with your skin . If you're looking for a safer beauty swap priority list, here's my suggestion:
- First: products that you apply regularly and that are designed to sit on or soak into the skin. This includes: body lotion, face lotions, serums, oils, makeup, toners, eye cream, etc. My go-to safer skincare brand here.
- Second: deodorant. My go-to safer deodorant here.
- Third: products that you soak in regularly, such as a bubble bath or other kind of spa-like soak. My favorite soak here.
- Fourth: soaps, including body wash and shampoo/conditioner. My favorite safer body products here and my favorite shampoo / conditioner.
- Fifth: perfume, if you wear it multiple times a week bump to the end of the list if you wear infrequently. My favorite safer perfume here.
- Sixth: hair styling products. My favorite safer styling products here.
- Seventh: nail polish. Read on for my favorites!
Water Permeability Test Does Not Work If The Nail Polish Is Peeled Off A Surface And Placed On An Absorbent Surface
Some attempts have been made to perform the Water Permeability Test by using a layer of nail polish that has been peeled off a hard surface and then placed on an absorbent surface.
This method creates a false negative due to the contraction of the peeled nail polish.
Think of the nail polish as a balloon with holes, stretched over a rough surface.
When stretched, the holes become large (hence allowing water molecules to pass through.
However, once the nail polish is peeled off of a surface the nail polish contracts and the water channels/pores of the nail polish contract and miniaturize.
This prevents the water from passing through the nail polish.
