This tin can be a skilful book for beginners and intermediate photographers who want to larn or revise technical aspects of digital photography. The diverse aspects of DSLR photography are well summarised and explained. The linked videos are a good complement to the text and the author is definitely a good communicator.Notwithstanding, it is not my loving cup of tea for various reasons:
I observe the title deceiving (or marketing-oriented). The perhaps excessive focus on equipment and technical knowledge will help readers creating technically correct just not "stunning" photographs. I found the instruction method appropriate but I didn't experience enthusiastic near the examples. Since the adjective stunning leaves room for personal interpretation, you can check out Tony Northrup'due south photography work and form your own stance about it.
In my view, the structure is confusing. I.e. I don't understand why y'all'd like to explain the employ of flash before shutter modes, aperture and depth of field. I'd personally argue the reader would first desire to feel comfortable shooting in transmission style before using a flash.
Although the volume includes chapters for dissimilar types of photography, it is evident that the take is that of a portrait photographer. In that sense, I'd recommend it more than for photographers with an orientation for portrait, family and wedding photography. If you are non already familiar with any of the other types of photography, this book and the complementary videos tin provide an entry-level and technically oriented introduction.
Finally, but importantly, the book lacks of wild animals ideals. Animals are treated as a target for taking a good photograph with no concern virtually using flash, feeding, caging or taking and moving them to a more advantageous position for your capture. Every bit a researcher, nature and wild animals advocate, I found very disappointing that the author encourages readers to take this attitude.

I've read a few books for beginner photographers and this one is at the top. Even today, September 2013, the volume is nevertheless updated. At that place is now an official forum for the book: sdpcommunity. Tony and Chelsea are agile there and it's incredible to take the choice to enquire the author directly if you don't empathise something.
There are dandy, helpful people at sdpcommunity who are glad to leave feedback on photos.
Of course there is likewise the Facebook group of the book which is definitely active, so SDP is a lot more than but a constantly-updating book. It'south a ticket to an entire customs of photography enthusiasts and professionals. It'south a ticket to an ever-expanding amount of data. And it'south just 10 bucks.

If yous could absorb everything in this book in one read, you lot would suddenly be a master lensman, perhaps one who never took pictures because he didn't know where to start. Most of the info in here I have already learned over xxx years of apprentice photography. Some are common sense. Some are specific to Nikon and Catechism DSLRs (I learned a few things about the settings on my D50). Some are debatable, such as use of a UV filter vs. a hood to protect your lens. I all the same haven't figured out the exposure chart, where shutter speed, ISO, discontinuity, noise, camera shake, subject movement, and possibly shoe size are all incorporated into a unmarried 2D chart, though I make those tradeoff decisions every time I shoot.
The best employ of this book would be as a reference. For case, if you know you are going to a zoo, read the affiliate on photographing animals (which has several valuable tips well-nigh zoo shooting). If you are getting comments from your snapshot subjects that they look fat or otherwise distorted, read the affiliate on portraiture.
I read nigh of this on a archetype Kindle, and finished upwardly on the Kindle app on an Android smart phone. You will become more out of this volume if you have a colour display, and internet access to run across the high-resolution copies of the pictures, and to sentry the videos.
I'd recommend this book equally a reference to folks getting a DSLR or advanced point and shoot for the offset fourth dimension, and to veteran amateurs to fill holes in their understanding of what they may accept been doing unconsciously.

This is a smashing book, for a reasonable cost. I was lucky enough to get it while it was on the free list, but volition recommend it to my friends as well. This is a great book, for a reasonable price. I was lucky enough to get it while it was on the gratuitous listing, but volition recommend it to my friends as well. This is a very clear and comprehensive volume on photography. My father was a professional lensman and gave me my first lessons on an old box camera before he'd let me near his more expensive ones. Over the years I had forgotten many of the lessons he taught me, but this book brought them dorsum. Now that we live in a digital age, being a good photographer is easier considering you lot don't need to worry about wasted film or whether your shots came out the way you wanted. This book gives articulate, easy instructions. It also has many pictures as examples of what to do, and what non to exercise. In that location are embedded videos as well, and links, to brand things absolutely clear. Even if you only take a few minutes to read through the basics, you'll be taking better pictures!

I read this on ekindle which worked smashing because information technology comes wit
This is a the perfect volume for someone starting off in photography who doesn't know anything. That was me when I bought my outset DSLR and found Tony and Chelsea on Youtube about 5 months ago. I was immediately drawn in with their amazing youtube videos going over everything and anything you could think of in photography. They're as well both very charming and funny people. Their personality comes through in their videos and in the book.I read this on ekindle which worked dandy because information technology comes with endless hours of video tutorials. As someone who is visual learner and needs things shown to me, the video format is perfect. So many times in the volume I'd not quite know what was meant, then I'd sentry the video and it would make sense. It'south really a brilliant idea to combine video and text in this way.
The chapters are very neatly organized. Y'all brainstorm with several chapters introducing bones concepts like how to etch (things like the rule of thirds), and then y'all motion on to things like lighting (what is the golden hour, what is hard light, etc). Then trouble solving, and how to brand changes to settings. The second half of the book then focuses in on different types of photography y'all may or may not exist interested in neatly separated past different chapters. For case, portraits, macro photography, weddings, wildlife, animals, landscapes, under h2o photography, etc. I found it easy to read carefully the parts I'm interested in (portraits, for example) and skim over the ones I'm currently not interested in (underwater photography, for example.) Overnice thing is this book works like a source you can come back to again and once again at any time to review. For instance, if anytime I'yard in the Alps and want to take photos of the landscapes, I can refer to the chapter on landscapes and get the equipment I need and read how to accept stunning photos and be ready to get.
Chelsea and Tony literally know how to take pictures of anything and everything. They have really done it all and have the cameras and equipment for literally every kind of photograph yous can think of and have years and years of experience. They demonstrate that in this book and in their videos. Information technology'due south really quite incredible.
Throughout all of these chapters, for the entire book, at that place are brusque little "tip" sections highlighted in a special color. I found that to be very helpful - it was like someone highlighted information technology for me saying this is very important. There are likewise suggestions for different exercises to try out. Lastly, there are little quizzes to test yous on the textile you just read, although I chose non to do them considering that's non my learning fashion, I can imagine information technology being perfect for some readers.
The writing is as well quite humorous at times and they manage to keep things interesting despite the content being dense photography jargon. They struck a really nice residual with that. It's overall very well written and well organized with bullet points and apply of italics and bold, etc. The style is very attainable and piece of cake to read.
Lastly, and maybe most importantly, this book comes with a private facebook group where people can mail one photograph a day with the photographic camera settings and get feedback from group members all of whom have too purchased this book and presumably read it. It's a grouping of very talented photographers. It goes to show that people who read this book really do learn because it is only that skillful! The grouping members have taught me a lot. People are also very civil and follow the clearly laid out rules. I've learned so many things through getting different kinds of feedback from them on my photos. Although the group is more often than not people posting wildlife and mural and portraits, people have been responsive to my street photography and helped me with it generously.
Considering of the facebook grouping and this volume and the videos, I've learned an unbelievable amount in the past v months. I've gotten lots of positive feedback and accept amazed my friends with the photos I've shared on social media.
You actually can't go incorrect with this book. If you read this and practice, yous volition be making astonishing photos. Thank you Tony and Chelsea!!

This book had a lot of practical how-to data on the fundamentals of photography, though there are sections that are slightly out-of-date. Though that'due south non what took away from the book for me, as books will e'er inevitably go out of date as fourth dimension passes and practices develop. The author inserted gender stereotypes (due east.thou. "male person clients will ever similar dirty jokes" and references to how women should only pose in "feminine" means) that I did not appreciate at all. It was a reminder for me of the fact that the photography industry in the west has been primarily flush white men looking at their subjects through a lens with no need or want to humanize them. Information technology made it difficult for me to accept the writer seriously as someone whose perspective on the art of photography is worth hearing, as he seems to be and so express in his view on other things.
I likewise want to +i what other reviewers take said that this volume felt very "salesy" - join my FB group, buy this equipment, etc. Also, the example photos were pretty lackluster - I get that his whole thing is that "these are actual photos I took" but that did lend itself to the overall feeling that he was selling himself more as a photographer rather than focusing on the practice of photography itself.
I would non recommend this book, as I am concerned that in reading it, they would absorb the subtle misogyny that comes packaged within. There are meliorate authors out in that location who can write well-nigh photography without having to add toxic masculinity into the mix. I'd prefer to read and recommend those authors instead.

I've been searching for a helpful volume about digital photography and I believe I've constitute one! Tony Northrup's DSLR Volume: How to Create Stunning Digital Photography by Tony Northrup is very clearly written, well organized and thorough. It includes an overview of photographic camera functions, trouble solving and chapters for specific subjects including; portraits, landscape, animals, macro, underwater and more.Every bit an gorging bird-watcher who has recently started trying to capture bird photos, I institute the introductory features, problem solving and brute capacity to be the most helpful. My only complaint is the comment near using audio to lure birds closer. It is disruptive to their lives, even when it seems otherwise, peculiarly during the convenance flavor. In addition it is illegal to use audio recordings with threatened and endangered species and in many parks. Please refer to the American Birding Association Code of Ethics for more than details.

This is more than than merely a book. The authors have also created an online community around it, where members tin can share and discuss the photographs they've made in light of the guidance in the book; and there's a YouTube channel that's regularly updated with information about techniques and equipment. Later there are more detailed explanations reinforcing these: the well-nigh important rule is the simplest: take lots of photographs.
Like many, I'one thousand an enthusiastic amateur: I'm not likely to start ownership bodies and lenses costing $1000, or even $500. But there's still much in hither for me to use, no matter what photographic camera I accept: composition, lighting, using natural calorie-free; too as how to brand use of shutter speed and aperture to create different furnishings and moods.
It's informative without beingness cavalier, helpful without oversimplifying; a useful, practical book, with lots of additional material. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.

Simply what I said. This whole process sucks. I pay for something to read. I don't retrieve I have to exist forced into a review and so have my kindle app Locked downwards until I do it. I hate this writer not because He isn't practiced but because of your crap requirements

Tony and Chelsea practice a dandy job in this book presenting techniques and concepts using real world examples. Tony has a gift for explaining things and then the average photographer tin understand and apply the lessons to further their ability to come across the shot and know how to setup the camera to capture the vision.

Very useful tricks given, for a beginner it is a must read. Even if yous don't understand how to take prissy pictures and compositions, y'all discover every single aspect in the videos provided. Definitely I will come back many times to the book to refresh before going on the field.

This was a perfect gift for me. The right level of technology explanation and applied application. I enjoy understanding how things work, and this book satisfied my curiosity. Good reference for those of us starting out, or early in, our digital photography journey.
